How many sessions are needed?
- In non–hormone-dependent areas, approximately 8 sessions are typically required, though more may be needed depending on the case. Intervals are usually 35–40 days because laser is most effective in the anagen (growth) phase. Extending intervals may increase the number of sessions required.
- In hormone-dependent areas (e.g., linea alba/abdomen, arms, nape of neck), the number of sessions varies and is often higher.
- For scattered hairs in hormone-dependent areas, multiple sessions are usually required.
Is treatment painful?
With Candela’s dynamic cooling (cryogen spray), treatments are designed to be among the most comfortable, safe, and effective options.
What should the patient know before and after treatment?
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure for 7 days before and after treatment.
- Shave the area 1 day prior; avoid creams on the day of treatment; do not wax or use bleaching products for at least 15 days before treatment.
- Use high-SPF sunscreen after treatment.
- IMPORTANT
Laser is monochromatic light—not “radiation”—and has no adverse effects when used by a properly trained operator.
At the first session, a detailed history is taken and parameters are individualized and recorded. At each subsequent session, response is assessed and settings may be adjusted to optimize long-term results.
In early sessions, treated hair shafts are shed gradually over the following days to weeks.
Contraindications
Photosensitivity, photodermatitis (patch test performed prior to treatment).
Epilepsy
Use of medications such as isotretinoin (unless discontinued 6 months prior).
Relative
Gold salt therapy for rheumatoid arthritis (risk of chrysiasis—permanent hyperpigmentation).
Pregnancy
Avoid treatment of abdominal area and bikini region.
